SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL

In 2012 the City of Allentown will mark a monumental milestone - its 250th anniversary, or Semiquincentennial.  Like our nation, our city has grown and changed during its long history.  From a small village along Trout Creek to the third-largest city in Pennsylvania. Allentown's 250th commemorates and celebrates our rich history, the revitalization of present day and an ever more promising future.  The celebration will be one that is for the community and therefore shaped by the community.  The year-long commemoration of Allentown's 250th will be on that makes a lasting impact not just for Allentown but for the region.

America On Wheels Museum

The America On Wheels museum, at 5 North Front Street, opened in 2008 and features more than cars. As a museum of over-the-road transportation, it is home to all modes of wheeled transportation, including bicycles, trucks, and carriages in addition to their car collection. In the interactive exhibits, visitors can have photos taken in the driver’s seat of a mini-Indy racecar, find out what type of vehicle they are most naturally suited to, test their knowledge of auto tools and their functions and even design their own car. Visit www.americaonwheels.org or call 610-432-4200 for more information.

Civic Theatre

Located on 19th Street in Allentown's West End, is the Lehigh Valley's home for Broadway-styled stage shows with community sensibility, in addition to being the area's only independent and foreign filmhouse. Their annual production of A Christmas Carol is a Lehigh Valley holiday tradition.

Cusine

Vestiges of Allentown's Pennsylvania German heritage remain present in its cuisine, and foodstuffs such as scrapple, chow-chow, Lebanon bologna, cole slaw and apple butter are often found offered in local diners and the Allentown Farmer's Market. Shoofly pie, birch beer, and funnel cakes are regularly found at local fairs. Several local churches make and sell fastnachts as a fundraiser for Fastnacht Day, the day before the start of Lent.

Due in part to Allentown's proximity to Philadelphia, cheesesteaks are also popular. Yocco's Hot Dogs, a regionally well-known hot dog and cheesesteak establishment with six area locations, was founded in 1922 by Theodore Iacocca, uncle of Lee Iacocca. In addition, A-Treat, a regionally-popular brand of carbonated soft drinks, has been manufactured in Allentown since 1918.

The Liberty Bell

Allentown holds historical significance as the location where the Liberty Bell (then known as the Pennsylvania State House bell) was successfully hidden from the British during the American Revolutionary War.
